2009 a retrospect

A friend had this on her blog and I really liked the idea of putting 2009 in restrospect. So here is mine...a tad late but better then never!

01. What did you do in 2009 that you’d never done before?
Got an office job – finally!

02. Did you keep your new year’s resolutions and will you make more for next year?
I don’t make any...I have stopped due to lack of completion LOL Its too hard to have that hanging over my head...so I just go with the flow and hope for the best!

03. Did anyone close to you give birth?
No

04. Did anyone close to you die?
Thank Goodness 2009 was allot better than 2008 in the respect.

05. What countries did you visit?
Ummm Canada hehe

06. What would you like to have in 2010 that you lacked in 2009?
A home with N...not inhabited by my in-laws

07. What dates from 2009 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
The week N went away to Serbia and I was alone for the first time with his parents...weird week!

08. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Landing a great job which will give me the experience I need to further my career goal

09. What was your biggest failure?
Not moving out when we had planned, due to circumstances with our economy N was laid off and that meant we both had no work! No work + no money = no home

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Once again...2009 was a better year in this department compared to 2008 – much stronger then before!.

11. What was the best thing you bought?
Hmm well there is a few...we bought a 31 piece stainless steel pan and pot set from Wolfgang Puck for our new place...it was on sale and could not , not buy it! Most of the best things we bought involve our ‘new ‘place, we think it will be less stressful on us to have things so when the time comes we are not rushing and scrambling to buy these items. Plus sometimes you happen upon a great sale and cannot say NO!

12. Whose behaviour made you appalled and depressed?
Sister – there is things I think she should be doing that she says she is but clearly she is not and she is getting nowhere and it’s been like this for years. Problem being ...all her problems are created by “others” not her. It’s the case of the Pity Me’s.

13. Where did most of your money go?
Eating out – we do this every weekend because it’s a way to escape the in-laws and have time for us. Once we have our own place though I cannot wait to start making yummy meals and actually getting to relax in our own place.

14. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
A few things come to mind; when my mom said she was going to visit her sisters in Europe for 3 months ( I was so happy for her, she can finally do things like this due to retirement), Going to Rogers Cup to see my fav tennis players. Being able to go home for 11 days during Christmas.

15. Compared to this time last year, are you:
happier or sadder?
Happier.
thinner or fatter?
Ummm really I think the same
richer or poorer?
Richer. (due to having a job LOL)

16. What do you wish you’d done more of?
Exercising.

17. What do you wish you’d done less of?
Eating haha, focusing on negative things

18. How did you spend Christmas?
With my favourite people on the planet, my family and BF

19. Did you fall in love in 2009?
I fall in love every day more and more with N (I know soooo cheesy!)

20. What was your favourite TV program?
Big Brother, Amazing Race, Unwrapped

21. Do you hate anyone now that you didn’t hate this time last year?
Hate is a strong word....so no

22. What was the best book you read?
Sophie Kinsella’s - Twenties Girl; made me laugh out loud!

23. What did you want and not get?
I am being repetitive I know! A home for BF and I

24. What was your favourite film of 2009?
Oh goodness...umm way to many to name but these come to mind – Taken, The Proposal, The Box – I don’t know why these came to mind.

25. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
Went home to visit, it was Easter weekend. Had cake and allot of food and presents – turned 26

26. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
A license and a home.

27
. What kept you sane?. BF

28. Who did you miss?
My Mom, because she is about 4 hours away.

29. Who was the best new person you met?
There are a few girls on a certain website  you know who you are

30. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2009
Not really a life lesson but, if your worrying about something now, ask yourself if it will matter in 1 month, 2 months etc...if no then FORGET ABOUT IT!

New Year, New Home??

For the past 2 years BF and I have wanted to buy a home, and for some reason or another we have been unable and are still living with his parents – my worst nightmare LOL.

As much as it seems great to live rent free, it really isn’t, because we have no place to truly call our own. I want a place to decorate, to relax, have our friends over since I love having dinner parties, living here makes that a tad difficult...ok who am I kidding it makes it extremely difficult!

Well 2010 is going to be the year we FINALLY take the plunge! Things have been looking good, BF found a great job in his field and I will have almost been at my job a year. We have decided that we will attempt to buy a condo by summer and I could not be more excited! I finally feel like our lives are back on track and we can open a new chapter in our lives...let hope engagement is in that new chapter!

Exited is putting it mildly, we have started collecting/buying items for our new place...as I type this there is a 31 piece pot and pans set in my closet, glasses, serving platters, 21 piece knife set all under the bed! If we don’t move out soon, I will not have any room for anything else! Not to mention what I have stored at my mother’s house.

I cannot wait to start thins new journey, it’s a tad scary but I would not have it any other way and I am so so so happy that I can take this journey with the man I love.

Sunday...bloody Sunday

I hate the end of the weekend...I have always really disliked Sunday. Everything seems to end on Sundays.

If you go on vacation, it usually ends on a Sunday, if someone comes to visit; they usually leave on a Sunday. The weekend ends on a Sunday. It makes me sad!

I wish these things could last forever...but alas they can’t and we must start the week over and anticipate the weekend again!

Hope everyone had a wonderful weekend!

Happy New Year...again!

Tonight is Serbian New Years; actually it is New Years for anyone that follows the Julian calendar (Ukrainians, Russians, Bulgarians and most Slavic Eastern European Countries). This New Years is sometimes referred to as The Old New Years. The Julian calendar was introduced in 45 BC by Julius Caesar, it was the only calendar used until the 1500 when some countries started using the Gregorian calendar which we use today.
I can’t speak for other religions or cultures but in the Serbian culture, Dec 31 is party time and Jan 13 is a time for friends and family and to remember our roots and continue to hold them dear. Many people will stay home with friends and family and have food and drink. Here in Canada, especially in big metropolitan cities such as Toronto there will be parties for the younger crowds at Serbian clubs/bars.
So to anyone celebrating tonight I wish you a Sretna Nova Godina! (Happy New Years)!

Love is a battlefield

I was watching the news last night and they were talking about love and how hard/easy it is to find. They had the author Elizabeth Gilbert who wrote “eat, pray, love” and her new book about relationships and commitment called “committed”. I have not read these books, but my next book will be Eat, pray, love.

This got me thinking about relationships, and what I have always preached to my friends and family is that n o matter how hard it is to find love; it’s harder to keep it. Most people assume that once you have ‘caught’ that great man, that’s it; no more work is needed. No no that is just where all the hard work begins. For me a great relationship consists of communication, trust, and intimacy (I don't mean just sex).

If I ever get aggravated with N, or feel like he is not listening or is doing something that bothers me, I always tell him, and I tell him to tell me too. If I don't know what bothers him, how can I fix the problem, or solve it? Same goes for him. I can't expect him to read my mind. We both have to be looking in the same direction in life for our paths to be consistent, he can't want one thing and I want another, there is no way our relationship will work , if I want to live in Vermont while he wants to move back to Serbia...get my point? :)

Trust....oh the BIG T word! Every magazine covers has something about trust, how to trust your man, how to know if he is cheating, is he trustworthy blah blah blah, it’s enough to make you scream! Why would you be with someone if you had any doubt that he would go behind your back and cheat? When I met N, I told him right away, I will never cheat, if I ever feel like this relationship is not working, or I have any doubt in my mind about you and me, I will tell you, but I will never go behind your back. And I expect the same from him...I'd rather you tell me you are having feelings for someone else, so I can pack my bags and move on instead of you cheating and then telling me. If you have doubts about your partner, how can the relationship be the best it can be? There will always be that little voice that is saying...but what if? I think it would be difficult to have a long and happy relationship with this doubt.

Intimacy!!! WOOHOOO...now I am not just talking about sexual intimacy, of course that is important, each partner should be willing to give and receive. But what I am most refering to is the simple intimate acts such as holding hands, kissing, cuddling. There is something so magical about giving or receiving a gentle kiss from N, I look forward to those more than any other kiss...these kisses seem to say I love you....and always will. Since day one I have not gone to bed without holding N's hand, and I believe this makes our relationship stronger, intimacy connect you and your partner in a special way, it’s a special bond only you two share,...it’s like your own private secret.

Things happen in relationship that will test them, in my three short years with N. two major things come to mind, and I could not imagine dealing with these issues without him. 1.5 years ago I witnessed the death of a loved one, my mom was away in Europe when this happened and it was me and my sister there, at this time BF and I were long distance, as soon as I called him at 5am crying, he didn’t even ask what, he got in the car and drove 4 hours to me. He stayed with me for the funeral; and a few days after until he had to go back to work. I had to be the rock for my family during this time because my mom couldn’t get a flight back right away. N was my rock...

A few months after this traumatic event, I had an emotional breakdown, everything came crumbling down, and my rock barrier had been broken. I was diagnosed with Anxiety Disorder brought on by a traumatic event (I will write a post about this at a later date)...I do not wish this world wind of thoughts and emotions on anyone! I was a complete mess...N took care of me, he took me to my Dr appointments, my group meetings, he comforted me at night when I would wake up screaming or crying...he made me feel safe. We have seen each other at our best and at our worst, and it’s for that reason I have no doubt in my mind, along with our communication, trust and intimacy that we will make it all the way.

Relationships should always be a work in progress, just like being a DR; new medications, diseases appear every day, and the DR needs to learn about these. That is how a relationship should be, things will come up, things will change, stuff will happen but I believe that if a relationship has these 3 key elements it will prevail and flourish to something even more amazing then you ever thought it could be.

Woe is Me

Here is a quote I like to think I came up with but I could be wrong, " Life is a buffet, you need to get up and get what you want!"
I say this often when I come in contact with friends or family who seem to always think...'oh why is nothing working out for me', or 'why is life easier for others but not me', or 'why can't this and this just happen to me'.
Look people, life is hard, its a struggle. people are dealing with issues big and small, and we should not be the ones to say "look what they have, why can't I have that" Everything comes with a price. Just because someone has money doesn't mean they have happiness, health love etc...there is always something missing. and Vice versa.
I am a big advocate of going after what you want, no one will get it for you, it won't just fall from they sky. You need to seek it go after it, grab it and never let go!
I am sure we all wish that every time we wanted something it would just appear...would't that be grand? Of course!! And sometimes things happen easier then other things but that doesn't mean that you can sit and let life pass you by because you think your entitled to it...that you don't have to do anything and it will happen. Along with this comes attitude, how can you possible achieve your goals if your negative all the time? we are our biggest fans, and our one and only best friend, if you think you can't do something then you probably won't accomplish it because your so negative! Everyone fails, that does not mean your a failure....get back up and try again! A failure is the one that stays down and doesn't try again!
Know I am not saying that I am Miss go getter and have the best attitude, by no means at all. I have my days when I just wish life would give me everything....it doesn't and so I have to think of plan B. I just think how great life could be if everyone tried there hardest to live there best.
